The Odin rune, also known as the white rune, blank rune, or fate rune is used in divination and meditation.

Odin rune meaning

Odin Rune symbolizes all the unpredictability and what is unknown to us. To begin with, we must keep in mind that in a rune reading, it has to be considered the center of the reading since it is an important rune.

This rune stands for change so whatever happens, you should accept it.

Odin’s rune is generally positive, so you should be happy about that change since it signifies progress in your life. When this rune comes out we are asked for an act of trust.

The extraction of the Odin rune brings out the deepest fears, but also the highest good. Goodwill and tolerance are the qualities of this rune, after all, one cannot exercise control over that which is not yet formed. The Odin rune calls for an act of courage, a leap of faith.

It is an empty rune, with no character of its own, personifying the unknown, prescribing the end of the ordinary path and the quick beginning of the next one.

The interpretation of Rune Odin’s meaning symbolizes a complex metaphysical concept: emptiness is the end, and simultaneously emptiness is the beginning.

It represents the path of evolution, the sum total of actions and their consequences. At the same time, the Odin rune teaches that many obligations change and evolve just as one changes and evolves. Nothing is predestined; obstacles along the path can become gateways to new beginnings. The extraction of the Odin rune indicates the progression of change.

Connected with faith and trust, as well as with the acceptance of change and the belief that “everything is yet to be done,” the Odin rune reminds us that we will travel lighter if we learn to give up the need for control and trust in others, in ourselves and in the generosity of nature, which always knows how to surprise.

It is necessary to eliminate prejudices and absurd beliefs that prevent us from giving new opportunities to ourselves and others.

The Odin rune advises turning fears into challenges and seeing them as possibilities for changes that will make one wiser and broaden one’s view of things.

It urges one to be courageous and take risks every now and then, even if it costs abandoning the security of routine and what one knows, whether in work, love or friendship.

Surely, if you adopt this philosophy, you will feel more alive and full of energy.

You are experiencing a pivotal moment. If you are single, you will probably start a new relationship; if, on the other hand, you have a partner, you may have to make important decisions about it, perhaps even a final breakup.

In any case, the Odin rune advises to think before making decisions.

The rune’s advice is not to let yourself be dazzled by the first opportunity that is offered: there are many interesting possibilities.

You need to adopt new, healthier habits and exercise.

You should also try to keep in touch with nature to relieve the stress of busy city life.

How did Odin discover the runes?

The Norse god Odin is a tireless seeker of understanding and wisdom, and he is willing to give up anything for this quest. Odin possesses only one eye because he sacrificed the other in order to have more knowledge and to be able to drink from Mimir’s fountain.

The story of how he discovered the runes is another example of his everlasting quest for wisdom, as well as his unstoppable will.

Odin’s exploration of the runes

At the center of the Norse cosmos is the mighty Yggdrasil tree, which is populated by many beings, some good some bad.

Among these beings, there are the Norns, three wise maidens who develop the destinies of all living beings including even the gods. One of the main methods they use to form destinies is to carve runes into the trunk of Yggdrasil. The signs then carry these intents throughout the tree, influencing everything in the 9 worlds

Odin saw the Norns and longed for their powers and wisdom. He thus decided that he would do anything to know the meaning of the runes.

Since the runes expose themselves to no one but those who prove worthy of their knowledge, Odin hung himself from a branch of Yggdrasil, pierced himself with his spear, and peered down into the shadowy waters below. He forbade all the other gods to provide him with the slightest help. He looked downward and invoked them.

He endured in this state, for a full nine nights and nine days. At the end of the ninth night, he finally saw the runes appear! They had accepted his sacrifice and revealed themselves to him, revealing not only their nature, but also all their secrets.

We can find Odin’s story of his self-sacrifice in the poetic edda

From Hávamál 138 and 139

Veit ek, at ek hekk

vindgameiði á

nætr allar níu,

geiri undaðr

ok gefinn Óðni,

sjalfur sjalfum mér,

á þeim meiði

er manngi veit

hvers af rótum renn.

I trow I hung on that windy Tree

nine whole days and nights,

stabbed with a spear, offered to Odin,

Sacrificing Myself to Myself,

high on that Tree of which none hath heard

from what roots it rises to heaven.

Hávamál 139

Við hleifi mik sældu
né við hornigi,
nýsta ek niðr,
nam ek upp rúnar,
æpandi nam,
fell ek aftr þaðan.

I didn’t find a place
in the corner,
I crawled down,
I picked up runes, I
screamed, I
fell back from there.

Through complete knowledge of the runes, Odin became able to heal emotional and bodily wounds, bind enemies and render their weapons useless, free himself from restraints, extinguish fires, expose and drive away practitioners of evil magic, protect his friends in battle, awaken the dead, and many other such things. In practice, he became one of the most powerful beings in the cosmos.
